Centro Studi Mascagnani of Livorno (C.S.M.L.)
Generalities
The Centro Studi Mascagnagni, a non-profit organization, was established in 1981 in
Livorno, Italy, Pietro Mascagni's birth place. The main goal of the organization is
to promote Mascagni's musical production. The C.S.M.L. works on several projects geared
towards that goal.
Ongoing Projects
- Extensive search and gathering of all published and
unpublished material by Mascagni whether owned by private persons, national
and international libraries, other public bodies or
corporations, etc. (autograph manuscripts, letters,
bibliography, rare articles and books).
- Organization of a complete catalogue of all the already
available as well as newly found musical material.
- Critical inspection of Mascagni's scores which were
arbitrarily tampered with to some extent, and possible new edition
of them.
- Organization of seminars, conferences, symposia to discuss
and to gain a deeper insight into specific topics of the art
of Mascagni and other contemporary composers and artists.
- Development and advertising of the Museo Mascagnano of
Livorno, currently hardly accessible and practically unknown
for several reasons, mainly related to lack of financial
support.
Projects for 2002
- Creation of a web site of C.S.M.L. containing all
necessary information on the research activity, the targets
and the relevant results achieved, which should be able to
meet the requests of historical, musicological and musical
character addressed to C.S.M.L.
- Publication of the Proceedings of the "Convegno di Studi
Mascagnani" that took place in Livorno on December 7th,
2000.
- Publication of the eight early arias for piano and voice
by Mascagni, to promote their knowledge.
- Publication of a monography about Illica and Mascagni's
Isabeau, written by Carlo Botteghi, current president of the
C.S.M.L. and author of an analogous work about Parisina.
- Production of a video tape on Mascagni's places, focused
in particular on Livorno and Roma, but also on years spent by
the composer in Cerignola and on the Museo Mascagnano at
Bagnara di Romagna near Ravenna.
- Promotion of a première at Livorno of the juvenile cantata
In filanda (never performed since 1881) on the autograph
score found and revised by the vice-president of C.S.M.L.,
prof. Cesare Orselli.
- Continuation of the organization of meetings and
conferences directed to improve the knowledge of Mascagni's
music, most of which is unfairly neglected.
Presidence
The C.S.M.L. is currently headed by prof. Carlo
Botteghi (president), prof. Cesare Orselli (vice president), and
Mo. Nedo Benvenuti (secretary). All three are noted specialists of
Mascagni and the authors of remarkable books and essays. See the
bibliography for more details.
