Piano Works
By David Vine

Introduction

This page presents a selection of piano recordings by David Vine, made at the Auditorium of the National Library of New Zealand on May 9, 2003. The following biography is borrowed from the CD Patricia Wright & David Vine - Serenata:

David Vine - Piano
"David Vine has consistently demonstrated his remarkable talents as conductor, accompanist and harpsichordist. A graduate of London's Royal College of Music, he has made a significant impact on the New Zealand music scene working with many choirs, orchestras and opera companies and conducting works ranging from Jesus Christ Superstar to Mozart's Idomeneo and Puccini's La rondine. His performances are marked by a rare combination of exciting creative energy, interpretive insight, elegance and consummate style. His knowledge of the orchestral repertoire is extensive, and he has a particular affinity with the symphonies of Anton Bruckner. A vast performing repertoire, which includes more than 20 concertos, also marks him out as the country's pre-eminent harpsichordist, and his editions of baroque music have been published in the U.S.A. and Vienna."

Audio Tracks

It is interesting to note how the two fragments, Un pensiero a San Francisco and La prima bagnante, sound similar. It is certain that the former was published in 1903. The latter was published only in 1908, but the similarity between the two pieces suggests that it could have been composed earlier.

Another connection can be made between Parisina, the opera composed in 1913, and Sunt lacrymae rerum!, published in 1914. The atmosphere and harmonies of the piano piece evoke some parts of Parisina.

The audio tracks available below in MP3 and Ogg format can be played and downloaded for personal use. Contact Mascagni.org for other uses. Thanks to Roger Flury and David Vine for contributing this material.
